Love it. The sermon at our church this weekend was about Native Americans and the importance they attributed to their names. Sometimes, when they were ill and the tribe's medicine man wasn't getting the results he wanted, he would have the tribe member's name changed because it was thought that the name was perhaps poisoned.*
Of course, now we're going to abbreviate it as NJ.
Hairdog *which tribe or which time period, I don't recall.
Isn't there a Jewish thing, too, about changing names... something about using a different name when someone is ill so the Angel of Death can't find the person or something....
Not totally up on ATJ (All Things Jewish)
So, NJ, what's up with your ankle? My husband recovered from a hip replacement in under a year! This must be making you nuts!

Remember in the "Red Tent" Jacob changed his name to Is'rael. Of course, he did that out of shame after the whole bloody circumcision slaughter event. When I read Corri's recent post where she said that NOP was sounding more like a god than a mortal, I was thinking about HD calling out for Alpha male help on his thread and I imagined NOP telling him to take his oldest son to the mountain.

Ankles can take their sweet time. MrsGGB's last surgery on hers was August. She finished up with formal PT at the end of December, but mainly because we were switching health insurance and it would not have been covered under the new. She still has to wear the special sock, still can't spend more than an hour or two a day on it, and may be several years (doc's words) before she regains full use, if ever.
Hairdog. I live in Indian / Native American (NA) country. I have dealt with NA that use their NA name. There is a lot of history and personal experiences that go into some NA names. Europeans use names that sound good or are trendy. NA use names (the old ones) that mean something about the person, especially if they got their NA name when they were older.
Speeking of church sermons, next week the pastor is going to describe PMS. No, not that PMS but "passive male syndrome"

The generally accepted (Christian and Jewish) interpretation of this event is that after Jacob wrestled with the angel, Jacob asked for a blessing, and the angel renamed him "Israel" which means "wrestles with God." Which is, of course, how the Jewish people came to be named Israel, since Jacob was the father of the 12 tribes.
I don't remember anything about bloody circumcision or slaughter. Or about shame being associated with the name change. I'll have to go look in the book.
Dinah has sex with the young prince and then he wants to marry her but her evil brothers object. They agree to the marriage if all the prince's subject and the prince agree to get circumcised. Then they kill all of them while they're healing from the surgery. Jacob is ashamed that he went along with his sons in this way.
