Remember in the "Red Tent" Jacob changed his name to Is'rael. Of course, he did that out of shame after the whole bloody circumcision slaughter event.
The generally accepted (Christian and Jewish) interpretation of this event is that after Jacob wrestled with the angel, Jacob asked for a blessing, and the angel renamed him "Israel" which means "wrestles with God." Which is, of course, how the Jewish people came to be named Israel, since Jacob was the father of the 12 tribes.
I don't remember anything about bloody circumcision or slaughter. Or about shame being associated with the name change. I'll have to go look in the book.
