I don't know what kind of dog you have, but have you thought about doing it yourself? the first time my long-hair cat developed this massive clump of hair (he stopped grooming and the whole top of him was one hard chunck of hair, we thought he had a disease, the vet shaved him for us for 25$ or so)
The next time it happened I got myself a pet shaving kit and shaved him myself, wasn't too hard, just made sure I gave him his fav food and he didnt; get scared of the clippers. Just a thought.
