Yeah, I've heard all that too.
I'm racking my brains for excuses...what would happen if you just said "I'm going to be out Tuesday evening. I'll be home at [whatever time]" Would he even ask where you are going? If so, how about..."a friend of mine needs to talk about some things for a while." If he asks who, you could say "Someone I met at [fill in the blank]." So you're lying, but there's some possible truth to it. Especially if you actually grew to feel friendship for anyone in the group. (I'm a writer-we're all lyers.)
What excuse do you give him when you go see the counselor? Or is that during work hours anyway? Maybe you could say you have to go to the office, or put in over time...then he'd really start wondering.
