From where I am sitting I think you are doing a great job. I don't think going black is what you need maybe just a little more distance. Not so much availableness.
Maybe while you are gone you can shoot him a simple email that for easter you are thinking of you and the kids doing ++++++++ (insert what ever you were thinking about). Since he does not seem to have any plans for the kids you are going to go ahead and make arrangements so they have a great easter.
