Hope your H's head is better. My H's is a bit messed up and I'm hoping it is the post-concussive syndrome thing. He was in a car accident a week ago. Rear ended at about 30 MPH at a stop light by a guy who dropped his beer. At first it seemed like it was aches and pains.
But, his head started to get a bit foggy when his pain increased. We think the shot of Tordol (sp???) was wearing off by then. Thursday, he said he felt a bit confused, it was very late, he was exhausted. Friday, he started making mistakes with words and having problems saying numbers. He doesn't seem confused mentally, but seems to be having problems getting the right words out.
We went to the ER, cat scan was fine and they admitted him. Today, they did an MRI but apparently we won't get the results until tomorrow. Neurologist was hopeful that it is just a concussion. He is still having problems with saying numbers (mostly years), and has made a few other odd slips, but I think it is better than last night.
I'm VERY frustrated that he had the MRI at noon and NO ONE has looked at it yet.
Good news -- the MRI (with and without contrast) was fine So, they are saying it is a concussion and discharging him!
I DO NOT like being scared like that.
Did I mention the driver was uninsured, driving with a revoked license, slammed into the car because he dropped his beer, and left the scene? Fortunately, an off-duty cop from another town saw the whole thing and followed the guy.
It made me feel alot better to know about your H while we were awaiting results.
Well, here's the scoop on post-concussion syndrome - most resolve quickly, but not all do. From your description, I would expect your H to be of the quicker variety. Depression and/or attention problems can occur, though, (in schoolkids you sometimes see their schoolwork go downhill), so just be aware.
In researching it this time with H's most recent episode, I found some interesting research on gingko - okay, so they used it on concussed rats, not humans, but the results were pretty impressive. I did have a patient once who had a severe post-concussion syndrome that lasted quite a long time - she got better quickly after her father recommended she try gingko. I was never sure at the time if it was just placebo-effect or not, but now with these rat studies, I found it convincing enough to make my H take gingko this time - you might want to try it.
Right now, he gets exhausted pretty easily and the symptoms seem to get worse with fatigue and stress. But, he is still definitely much better than Friday. The speech problem seems to be mostly limited to when he is ASKED to provide names or numbers. He knows the answers, can write the answers, but can't say them sometimes.
The neurologist didn't come back to see him when he released him (he just looked at the MRIs and signed a discharge order.) So, we aren't real clear on what to expect. Our chiropracter (lol) said in most cases everything should resolve in 6 weeks, though it may take 6 months.
Hopefully, it will be pretty quick. H and I will be totally worn out as it is with the new baby in a few weeks
Thanks again. It really does help to hear your experience with this and know everything should be OK.
Oh, I SEE OT, you dispense all this advice and all the while you are successful in YOUR marriage just because you keep him "concussed" all the time, lol.
Seriously, I hope he is ok and am excited for you with the baby coming soon! I so rarely hear about YOUR life that it's nice to see a tiny glimpse every once in awhile.
Okay, my fellow baby boomers will appreciate the irony of this picture which greeted me in my boys' room yesterday: S14 Wearing Aviator-style sunglasses Burning sandalwood incense (no pot being smoked, honest!) Listening to "I am the Walrus" !!!!!!
When I was his age, listening to "I am the Walrus", burning incense, etc. - I NEVER could have imagined I would have a child doing the same things when I was FIFTY!!!!!!
Should I show him how to make a headband out of a leather shoelace next??????
