I don't think that's uncommon at all. I believe most of us (men and women) want to feel that we are attractive to others...but it doesn't necessarily mean we are comfortable with our sexuality. One doesn't always have anything to do with the other.
My favorite is the image that most people have seen. It is of 2 boxes. The first is the male sex drive. there is a toggle switch for on.. and off. that's it. The femail box is covered with dozens of switches, dials, gears, etc.
Just tried to find a link, but Google is giving me all sorts of crap that I DONT want to see. Oh well. I am sure you all have laughed at the picture...

I think you are talking of Jack Nichelson in that movie with Helen Hunt. When asked how he thinks up female characters so well he responds "I think of a man then remove reason and accountability"
