He's seen you struggle these last weeks with your father's illness and perhaps that outfit in VS spoke to him of fun sex and a happy wife--something that's been lacking in both of your lives lately, due to no fault of your own.
Also this may just be a facet of his sexuality..not the whole kit and caboodle.
Fwiw, H and I went into VS last weekend on our anniversary. We were just browsing and nothing really spoke to either of us--and I like slinky lingerie. It is possible that he went in and didn't see anything so he got the only thing that looked appealing. I can also tell you straight up that if VS didn't happen to have anything interesting out, it would never occur to my H to go to another store and look in their lingerie dept.
I suppose what I'm getting at is that I see a bit of awkwardness in your H but a WHOLE lot of love and devotion and trying to meet your needs. Iow, a lot more good than bad in this situation.
I don't think he wants or expects you to act any particular way. He just wants to see your bouncy ass in the short shorts and your jiggly bits in the tank top. Sometimes it's that simple.
