Wow, Heather, this is a huge clue here! One of the big driving factors behind midlife crisis is - Fear Of Death and Dying. Your H has FEAR with a capital F! He can't even hear the word! He's trying to act as if death doesn't even exist! He must be terrified every day, no?
Not sure how best to help him with this, but man, this might explain a lot.
