It also helps publishers when they are considering whether to print your book. They usually ask for the synopsis first, to help them decide whether they are interested in the book.
I continually add to mine to help me 'build' the scenes in my book, which helps if I'm stuck with writer's block. Quite often I will go back into a scene after I've written it and add more, and my synopsis is valuable in enabling me to do this more easily.
