Hairy, I used to get caught up in the "most marriages" bunk too, until I realized that I could effectively shut that argument down by saying, "I don't care what other people do in their marriage--I'm telling you what it takes for ME to feel happy."
He still argued for a quite a few months but he eventually stopped.
