I'm with you, froggie. I actually brought up the "buffoon" stereotype to my W. She says it's not the same thing, because men are in control of the media, are writing the commercials, are writing the sit-coms, and it's okay for men to make fun of other men. It's not okay for men to make fun of women. She likens it to the "n - word." It's okay for a black person to say it, but not a white person. It's okay for a Jew to tell a Jewish joke, but not a non-Jew.

Yes, I agree that people need to get over their martyrdom.

Why is she so opinionated? Good question. I think her answer would be that SOMEONE has to be opinionated about this. Someone has to be offended and set things RIGHT.

She took the Women's Studies classes and I guess it struck a chord in her. Frankly, some of the literature she brought home should be filed under the section at Barnes and Noble titled, "Manhating."

HD

Getting involved with something you care about is one thing, but being sooooooooooo out of it because of a billboard is kinda extreme to me. Maybe I just don't get it

I wouldn't exactly say that I'm "offended" by Hooters, but I do think that it's in pretty poor taste. But hey, to each his own.

The chick flick TV ad is a whole different story. It's not demeaning at all; it just acknowledges what the marketing gurus have known for years: taken as a whole, men and women have different tastes in movies. The message that the TV is so good that the owner will even want to watch things contrary to his tastes is in no way demeaning to someone with differing tastes.

In other words, Mrs. Dog needs to lighten up. To be offended by something like that, she had to be looking for a reason to be offended.

I think I've met your wife LOL. And I would have to respond to the "unenlightened" comment with saying that she's being close-minded if she cannot listen to other (your) opinions...afterall, everyone is entitled to one.

One great thing I can say about my LDH is that we can agree to disagree...we don't always have to see things eye-to-eye. In fact we don't see eye-to-eye on many controversial subjects....this is something he's having to get used to. In the past he had someone (like your wife) telling him he was "unenlightened".

Advertising is rife with gender typing. There are plenty of women in advertising. How much gender typing is there in an episode of Oprah? How damaging is gender typing? Don't many of the stereotypes that characterize gender typed images contain a grain of truth?

Movie producers make movies that are targeted for women. That is what makes a chick flick. W should understand that men are frequently turned off to chick flicks because they know the movies aren't speaking to them. The same goes for action flicks that are targeted toward men. How many buddy cop flicks are there that somehow end up in a strip club?

Good chick flick: "Terms of Endearment"
Bad chick flick: "Steel Magnolias"

And finally, HD, how do the two of you sit through a televised sporting event and make it to the end in one piece, given all of the blatantly sexist ads that they show? Maybe you don't even try.

Ok...hold the phone! She says men are in control of the media? Has she ever read the credits? Ever watched "Sex in the City"?! That show is written by a woman from...believe it or not, Oklahoma (I know, I went to school with her :-)

Women are in EVERY part of the media today, writers, producers, directors, marketing campagne managers, I could go on and on but I won't bore you.

If she truly believes men are in control of the media then she would be the one who is unenlightened....does she not know, or has she forgotten that it is a woman who is now in charge of Playboy magazine?

We have definitely agreed to disagree on the billboard issue. While I understand why she is offended, I think that the universe of people offended by the ad is very small, and that the intent was not to offend at the expense of women. She disagrees with me, but realizes that I'm not going to come around to her way of thinking. We're not having a full-fledged fight on this, just a "spirited" debate.

She can get pretty disgusted with me, but I certainly don't do any tongue-wagging. I do have to say, however, that I love the boobies.

And GEL, I know this (that women are big in the media industry), and so does she. I think she likes to play the "gender victim" card, and portrays the media as white men in suits.
