Do you think you could get him to read a couple of books with you? I'm thinking specifically of Your Money or Your Life (a good book about being really conscious where your "life energy" = money is going, and whether your spending is really consistent with your values (like desiring an early retirement but spending $200 a nmonth at Starbucks would be inconsistent).
The second book is "Smart Couples Finish Rich" - I've only read Smart Women Finish Rich, but this book is very similar, I believe - a good all-round finance book that may help you both focus on saving for the future.
Also - remember to keep in mind what spending means to him. I'm the frugal one in our household, and one of the things I've had to learn is how important gifts are to my H, because of childhood issues.
