That's very similar to something W makes that comes from her old vegetarian cookbook:

Savory Cheese and Onion Pie

Basic shortcrust pastry for 10" pie
10 oz. cheese: 1/2 Swiss & 1/2 Gruyere
2 Tbs. flour
2 large onions
4 Tbs. butter
1 tsp. chopped basil
2 large tomatoes, sliced
2 large eggs
3/4 cup cream

Prep crust, line a 10" pie dish with it and chill.

Grate chese and toss with flower.

Melt butter in large skillet. Slice onions & saute gently in butter till brown, ~1/2 hr. Spread 1/3 of cheese over bottom of pie dish, then spread onions over cheese. Saute tomatoe slices in remaining butter with basil on top for just a minute or two. Layer the tomatoe slices on top of onions, cover with the rest of the cheese.

Beat eggs with the cream and pour over the cheese. Sprinkle with nutmeg if you like. Bake in pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for 35-40 min. or until top is nicely brown.

This crap is really good!
