Ok, I'm going to go against the crowd here and say, Who cares? So she lied about reading your book. The changes are still positive right? You still felt closer to her than you had in 22 years right?
So why the focus on her (really dumb) lie? Just tell her it's no big deal and that you would be glad to pick up a copy for her if she wants one. Obviously her curiosity got the best of her and she must have LIKED what little she read or her response would not have been so good. She is (was?) being affectionate so I would say that this is a GOOD development!
She is backtracking now because she feels awkward for telling such a silly lie and getting caught. Also she expects that you expect her to do this so she is. Did that make sense, lol. Michele talks extensively about this...whatever you expect, you will get.
I would continue to be upbeat with her and encourage her to read your book anytime she wants. Also move in for more affection and see if she reciprocates.
In my opinion this is a good thing! You've not only got her curiosity up but your changes have also prompted some affection in her..it's all good!!
