I have picked up some "tricks" to help increase the length of my answers. "Do you want to hear the long or the short version?" works well.


Me:"I just got back from hunting."
Other: "Did you get anything?"
Me:"no"

or


Me:"I just got back from hunting."
Other: "Did you get anything?"
Me:"Do you want to hear the long or short answer?"

or

Me:"I just got back from the most scary hunting trip."
Other: "What happened?"
Me:"Do you want to hear the long or short answer?"

There are some good youtube videos disecting how Tom Hanks and others draw the listener in and tell their stories.


"Did you win any money in vegas?" Gives you an opening to delay that answer and fill in more details about the trip.
