Most of us do/did not know how to properly interact.
PuppyDogTails, RobX, AllenA, Coach, Gucci, all had different approaches, they all were effective. Learning the different approaches and knowing when to apply them is a great skill to have.
Most of the behaviors are predictable. Being prepared in advance on how you want to behave/interact/respond is extremely helpful.
