You might not be able to. Words once said cannot be unsaid. What do women struggling with their weight love? The husband who acknowledges their struggle and says "I love you no matter what you weigh" or the husband who replies, when a woman complains about her difficulty losing weight "there's more of you to love".

There are ways to convey your concerns about their health and your desire to help them live a long healthy life with you without being critical.

How to fix it now? Own it. Acknowledge that you were inappropriate, that you didn't truly understand how difficult weight loss was, and that you love her no matter what she weighs. It may be too late, but if it's not, that is the way.
