Yes, it can be that crazy and he was hoping that you would be crazy enough to go along with his request. He can put his family up in a hotel near him. He can either foot the entire bill for the hotel or split it w/them and, better yet, he can sleep on his couch and give them his bed for the time that they are visiting.
