I would look in the coat pocket, if it's there, respond, "Yes, it is here." If it's not, I would respond, "No, I looked and it is not there." Short, simple and to the point.
Thanks leahsue. I did look and it's not there so will go with latter option. Hopefully, it appears 'as if' enough?
