I think the word she meant was "conflicting" (???) ... and it all depends on what stage the relationship is at. In Kitti's case, her H has made some personal growth and has turned his perspective around from not seeing much of a future in the M to the future with Kitti looks promising ... (just like during a courtship that is going well).
When a spouse's POV does take a positive shift, then our efforts to nurture this shift are no longer seen as pursuing but as encouraging. The trick, too, is keep the nurturing in balance and not to make it overbearing ... too much is just as damaging as not enough, so a little aloofness is still has its place.
