Actually ended up having a rather pleasant conversation with ex on the phone. I think things turn ugly when he feels like I'm keeping him in the dark. I think I managed to get across that that is never my intention, I just don't have the answers myself yet. He also seemed positively surprised that I asked him to come look after D for en entire weekend when he gets back. Hopefully he realizes I'm not trying to get in the way of them having a relationship.
