Doing nothing sounds like the way to go for the moment. You don't have to cut off contact abruptly with MIL, it would seem ungrateful after their help, but I'd try and find a little space. He is their son and no matter how disappointed they are with him they'll still support him and validate his decisions. You've taken a nasty knock with the theft when you were feeling down.
