I don't know what a hobby stock costs. I can give you examples of what our equipment is though.

Build complete brand new car from ground up is 100,000+!!!!!
So putting it into perspective, we won't even fire any of our motors for less than 5k to win. And at 5k we will take a year or 2 old car with an old or small motor. New cars and big motors don't leave the shop unless we can win 10,000 plus.

we built chassis for under 3000 motor 5400 oil pump carb and rest ehhh maybe 500 tires 50 each use a few weeks fuel 14/gal
and knock on wood motor has been good 3 years and he is always swapping parts for other parts and beating people down. Bodies come from older cars in the rules specs and we can usually use other parts from them so he spends 300 on an old car and we save 700 in parts! guess I shouldnt complain!
We have to make bodies! Motors are good for about 500 laps before freshening (new bearings and rings) which is about 8000. That is if they don't break before that haha. If a rod lets loose, we have already trashed a brand new motor on the first night out!

One big difference, it sounds like you guys do it out of pocket. We have credit cards which we don't get the bills for sponsors are wonderful things!

we cant freshen them they are sanctioned stamped and if opened are illegal! They are good until they blow up! Unfortanantly a 5400 motor shall cost us double that because I do not have boundaries and let him put it on a cc! that was never paid off ! Heck no I could never afford anything like that in a million years! I make 1/5th of that a year! But I bet they are fast and now I need to see them! The only racing I have seen I do not care for are sprint cars.....booooooring time trials!
Wicked fast, our local track, the 410 sprint cars do 17.5-18 second laps (big 1/2 mile track) our late models will do 18.2-18.7 without the sissy wings

If you google super late model videos, Lucas oil late model or world of outlaw late model videos you can grab a feel for it. A lot of guys have go pros and load it onto you tube. Search around a little and you will find some cool stuff to watch
