BW05, YES....empathetic and compassionate is so very hard to be with my H too. Mine is also in a place of being unable and unwilling to change and because of a PA. We are very similar as I tell myself too that my H is not himself at the moment, I don't recongnise him.
Keep being strong & very courageous & don't let the pain make you hate, be soft.
