Being in the dumps like he was and then having a grand project like that? I agree with the others: this looks a lot like mental illness, like bipolar disorder or just hypomania. I've been exposed to an un-medicated (but also diagnosed) person once and she almost drove ten of us in the ditch with her antics. I hope you're getting professional advice on how to deal with this.
