Is it a way to ensure that you remain right where you are so that you are a convenience to him, i.e., when he wants you? If your financial situation w/the business hasn't been settled up and you are not put on paper as a partner, then who is to say that you won't be in the same position w/a house purchase?
These are questions that you will need to think about. Are you willing to gamble on the what ifs? You are the prize and shouldn't have to be an "option".
