What I'm suggesting is that he doesn't want to go and say "Hey look, I've changed, and I did it for me." At least in my case, that goes down the "Yes, it's all about you" path. It's better to show change than to proclaim change.
It's a completely different situation if she notices the changes and asks why he did it. Then it would be fine to say he did it for himself. But that's not how I read the original post.
And yes, if you've committed to spider watch, don't reneg now.
