Bea, I agree w/you, they must work through their issues and heal in order to a meaningful relationship down the road. If, they don't work through all of their issues and heal, they will continue to repeat the same mistakes again and again in future relationships.
Sit quietly, the answers will reveal themselves when you least expect them to. The past is gone, the present is a gift and you need to focus on today, allow the future to reveal itself when it is ready.
