You need to have a calm talk wit SO and yell him the two of you need to figure out a way to get you a car. Offer some suggestions, whatever you think is reasonable. Beater, new used with low payments, whatever. If he won't consider it, what other avenues do you have to get a car? You can't continue to be so completely dependent on an unstable man.
