Most school boards here seemed to have planned things very well for them - they have a Professional Development Day (supposedly for teacher training) on Friday 20th December so the kids break up for Christmas on the Thursday. I'd be willing to bet there won't be many teachers actually doing training on that Friday! And Christmas break isn't the only time they've done that - Thanksgiving weekend had a PD day on the Friday so the kids got a 4 day weekend and they've done it again at the winter break in March where there's a PD day on the Friday before the break.
