I don't really have an answer on the BDay thing...so I'll just tell you what I did.
Monkey was noticably quiet and absent on my birthday. So, for his birthday, I mentioned his upcoming birtday and said, "Hey, since we didn't celebrate my birthday, how bout we go to dinner and celebrate both!"
He agreed and from what I remember a nice time was had by all.
