WFM, I hate to say this but I don't feel like you had a backslide because it doesn't seem like you have started yet. You continue to worry so much about what he is doing, his reactions to things, etc.. And the part where he said dont corner him should scream loudly to where he is at. He wants out!! You have to give him the space to comeback or you are going shove him off the cliff
