As I've said before, likely that both his parents were very messed up, emotionally unavailable during his childhood. Likely that he witnessed his maternal grandmother abusing his mother as a young child, physically and emotionally.
I would bet this is something he is trying to resolve somehow, I know W's abuse is a factor...FWIW...
