You are right about Indonesia. 13,700 islands with a population of over 250,000,000 people and over 80% of them are Muslims.
Unfortunately, one of my issues is that I never really bothered to learn the language in depth and I always had a certain arrogance so I never really got to know the locals.
After 12 years I've only got 3 Indonesian friends (4 if you include my wife) and I'm ashamed of this. This is why one of my 180s is to learn the language and to show more empathy and understanding towards to locals.
I know that although I never disrespected my W directly, I have been quite verbally harsh towards the locals and the culture and that over the last 10 years, it's taken its toll on my W.
Imagine someone living with you constantly putting down your culture and heritage, They may not be insulting you directly but I'm sure that over time you take it that way.
As far as the people being nice? It depends on your attitude. I didn't think they were but I now see how I was wrong. I've been getting along much better with locals since I've changed my attitude, and I intend to keep it up.
Cheers Rough!
