No gifts. No feelings. Just want to say something about the date. That's a great suggestion, and fairly benign. I do sense with some time apart from the kids she has begun to realize things going forward won't necessarily be how shed like them to be. Not enough for her to consider working on us, but accepting she's not going to have the things most precious to her on a daily basis. Will see how she handles that over the coming weeks.
It's a little like the same dynamic with how you tip crappy service at a restaurant. If you leave NOTHING, the server may just think you FORGOT. Whereas, if you leave a NICKEL, then they get the message, LOL.
