If you can use some empathy with him that may help. This is more getting at his feelings... e.g., "Wow, how awful for you, you must feel terrible, you worked so hard and you lost". Sorry if that's pointing out the obvious but I had to have empathy explained to me before I actually got it.

It's so ironic that we're raised to be independent and strong, and go-getters, and it turns out that what they want is June Cleaver. Sigh...

Speaking of June Cleaver, I have a tart in the oven right now because my H complains that I never make dessert for him! Of course, he probably won't eat it but he can't say I didn't make it!
