It's been my experience that they do not let go in a healthy way. They also act from fear from what I've seen and heard and learned. Hard to imagine, but to them fear is very real.
It doesn't seem odd to me that he is passing his fears on to his girls. Likely seems normal, protective and fatherly to him. To an outsider, we wonder if he is walking down the street talking to himself and the aliens
