Cold sores are also the herpes virus and a majority of the population has either type 1 or type 2 herpes. He has lived with herpes for 20 years and has had no outbreaks for many years. His wife (who also has herpes) does not have outbreaks at all. So, I don't believe there is any reason to believe you will eventually get it.
