Nhmom, How old was your husband when he was adopted/given up? Do you feel there are any family of origen issues here? I'm wondering if your son's age has triggered a painful memory for him. Was your husband ever demonstrably loving and kind to you?
It's a shame your husband won't seek counseling, given his childhood I'd wager he has many tough issues to work through.
