Everyone I talk to tells me he's being controlling, manipulative, and emotionally abusive and that I need to not have anything to do with him for now

I think everyone hears this from their friends and family. The point is that they don't know. And quite frankly when we accuse people of being controlling and manipulative it usually means there is malicious intent.
In all of our cases, the WAS honestly believes that they are going to be much happier single or with someone else. Don't pay attention to what your friends and family say or at least do so with a grain of salt.
