my personal record for putting son back in his own bed, while I was 7 months pregnant, was 27 times...in one night.
And the night before I did it 23 times, then lost my temper and yelled at him, which made him cry (H was on call so he was not home)
and when he cried, I let him stay in my bed...the NEXT night I calmly but firmly and exhaustedly...put him back 27 times and locked my bedroom door.
I HAD TO SURVIVE...and lo and behold. 3=4 nights and he was on his own.
After that there'd be a night or two a week where he'd wake up once or twice, we'd go in SILENTLY and check him, and leave the room. NO "rewarding" him with lots of comforting, or a bottle or more time, just making sure he was fine...
then doing it less and then after a bit, checking ONE time only...to let him know that YES we were alive and well in the next room but he needed to soothe himself. IT IS a life skill they need...
& it saved us all.
