I can't relate since there's no current US politician who would elicit the response that Jack Layton did in your neck of the woods. Perhaps Bill Clinton would - despite his extra-curricular activities.
As a (somewhat) conservative Republican, I do raise my wine glass to President Clinton - and to Jack Layton as well. True populists are very rare - and need to be recognized when they do appear...
