I don't think that you should say jack to your FIL. He was in the wrong. Nothing you do here is going to help you. You apologize, you look weak... You try to open a dialogue, it may go badly and then your W has more to be p!ssed at you about. You open a dialogue, it goes well, I think that you probably still end up looking weak bc you let your FIL get to you in the first place...

I just don't see the benefit right now... maybe in the future man... but not now.
