I think you get opportunities to make a positive impression. Lots of folks here would love to have some of the chances you have to do that. In other words, you get to see him, etc. He does make an effort (eg, buying you the necklace, once in awhile a kind word). I imagine it feels like crumbs to you but that's where you begin.
When you get them, why not make the MOST of them, rather than giving him an opportunity to confirm the choices that he has made?
