I agree with the others. A simple birthday wish is probably best in this situation. When you invited H to join you and D for Christmas, you were allowing him to enjoy everything you had prepared for you and D. You had not prepared dinner, cookies, decorations specifically for H.
By sending H a simple e-mail you are being consistent in your behavior in that you are acknowledging his birthday (keeping the door open a bit) but letting him know that you don't intend to be his buddy.
