There is nothing wrong with either of you. For him, to say it made him feel weird as a guy is just that, an excuse. And his request? Sounds to me he just wants you waiting in the wings . . faithfully. Not a very even deal. Believe they call it cake eating? You are who you are and you deserve to feel special about that part of your life. Go slow and breath. It sounds to me like you will know when the right someone comes into your life that you want to share that with, and he'll be appreciative of that in you.
