I'm actually a bit proud of him for not going with her if he really didn't want to. I just hope he did it tactfully, especially since she did go all out. That part sounds like he wasn't too smooth...
"Wow, that is so flattering and nice that you asked me. I wasn't expecting it (kat - sounds like she told you about it so you could give him a heads-up, or test the waters or something...?). But, I don't think I would be the best guy to take you to this dance, I'm sorry." And of course, he pulled her aside, out of sight from his friends, and made sure she had an opening to escape/save face......?
Learning experience for both of them. Better to do it as a teen than as us old foggies!
