My guess would be to take the statement literally. His grandmother wants you and the baby there, not necessarily him. If you have had a good relationship with the family you might say, "That's very kind of her. I don't want to disappoint her so you may tell her that [baby] and I accept her invitation."

I will go b/c I do want to and I am hopeful it will be good for us to just get away from everything, not to have to discuss our relationship, and be a family--something we haven't been for a while. I really do want to go. I'm just so scared to read into something that's not there. That's part of my problem.... Thanks for your input, though. You make a lot of sense!
