So we ended up talking, and basically she said that if I treated her with respect, showed her I was a good man, etc she would come back home....
.... not sure how I feel about that, and that's what I told her. She said, "I don't think you understand, John. Me coming back home is completely dependent on you. Right now I can't do that. But if things changed I'd be willing to try."

You have got to be F'n kidding me...
This. You've been changing, John. Not everyone thinks you've been doing a great job handling everything, but you've been trying to change. It's not up to you anymore, you've changed and will be fine no matter what (or so you tell yourself, keep working on that). Now she has to show that she's changed and wants to do the work, and her statement boils down to she hasn't and doesn't. It's not dependent on you, don't let her put that pressure on you, keep working on yourself. Let her chase you.

There is sit-com material in here. What would Cary Grant (his movie persona) say?

"Have I failed to please her highness the unfaithful once again? This is terrible. I should be dismissed! In fact, I insist on it" <wink> "You're going to wind up a lonely, old and bitter woman if you don't wise up".

Not a John Wayne officianado, but I did re-think the Cary Grant imagined quote to include input from "Philadelphia Story" (also staring Jimmy Stewart and Katherine Hepburn":
Quote:
I don't think you understand, John. Me coming back home is completely dependent on you. Right now I can't do that. But if things changed I'd be willing to try."
"That's awefully generous of you. You know, you are generous to a fault... just not other people's faults. I feel sorry for you because you're never going to know what it's like to really love anybody unless you wise up. I'm just glad your problems aren't also mine anymore"
